Boos & Bravado: Juan Soto’s Epic Return to the Bronx Sparks Loud Reactions

After just one electrifying season in Yankee pinstripes, Juan Soto helped power New York to the 2024 World Series. But in a stunning twist, the superstar slugger crossed borough lines and inked a jaw-dropping 15-year, $765 million deal with the Mets — the richest contract in sports history.

That blockbuster move set the stage for a high-voltage return Friday night as Soto stepped into Yankee Stadium for the first time as a Met, during the opening game of the much-hyped Subway Series.

While the Yankees surged to an early 4-0 lead, all eyes were locked on Soto’s first at-bat. Bronx fans wasted no time letting their feelings be known — rising to their feet with a chorus of boos and jeers that echoed through the stadium. But in classic Soto fashion, the 26-year-old remained unfazed, tipping his helmet with a sly smile in response.

Speaking to The Athletic before the game, Soto brushed off the hostile reception:

“I don’t mind,” he said. “You know Yankees fans — they can surprise you with anything.”

Soto had admitted earlier in the offseason that he was “expecting the worst” from the passionate Yankee faithful, but his excitement for the moment never wavered.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone even weighed in ahead of the matchup, urging fans to keep it respectful:

“Just come, have a good time, and don’t take things too far.”

Soto’s impact with the Yankees was undeniable — 41 home runs and a .288 batting average in 2024 — but his decision to join the crosstown rivals sent shockwaves through MLB. So far with the Mets, he’s off to a solid start, smashing 8 home runs in just 43 games.

As the Subway Series heats up, one thing is clear: Soto’s saga in New York is far from over — and the Bronx won’t forget anytime soon.
